DIMACS/CCICADA Interdisciplinary Seminar Series Presents

Title: Predicting Viral Memes using Community Structure

Speaker: Yong-Yeol Ahn, Indiana University

Date: Monday, March 4, 2013 11:00am - 12:00pm

Location: DIMACS Center, CoRE Bldg, Room 431, Rutgers University
             Busch Campus, Piscataway, NJ

Our life relies on various complex systems: the intricate mechanisms
of our bodies, social systems in our society, and many more. The basic
structure of these complex systems can often be described as a network
that consists of individual elements and the interactions between
them. For example: interacting genes, proteins, and metabolites form
biological networks; interacting neurons form a brain network; and
interacting people form a social network. In this talk, I will discuss
a fundamental topic "network communities" by introducing two of my
recent studies: finding highly overlapping community structure and
exploiting community structure to predict virality of memes.
