While Hurricane Maria and the economic crisis have thrown into sharp relief the forms of insecurity that many Puerto Ricans on the archipelago and in the diaspora live with, this conference posits the question of how insecurity may be considered a persistent aspect of puertorriqueñidad. Colonial rule, military service, migration, natural disasters, low wages, unemployment and recurrent debt crises have generated immediate and lasting forms of insecurity for Puerto Ricans.

The Center for Latino Arts and Culture's (CLAC) was established in 1992 to research, document, interpret and promote Latin@, Hispanic, Caribbean, and Latin American arts and culture. CLAC seeks to build a student-centered, learning community where students can better integrate experiential, academic and service learning about Latino arts and culture in order to become strong leaders and responsible global citizens. We advocate for the wellbeing of our students and work to create effective access to University services and resources.
