Subject: The Polygamy Situation in Canada

Dear Discussion Coordinators for the Violence Against Women Campaign of
Africa,

On November 23, 2011, Chief Justice Robert Bauman of the British
Columbia Supreme Court ruled that s. 293, Canada's law banning the
practice of polygamy, is valid and constitutional.

In his ruling which can be read at www.stoppolygamy.com Chief Justice
Bauman listed the many, many harms of polygamy to women, children and
society at large.

In spite of this ruling, no charges have been laid against the infamous
practicing polygamists of Bountiful, British Columbia (Mormon
Fundamentalist Polygamy) or Imam Ali Hindy of Toronto, Ontario (Muslim
Fundamentalist Polygamy).

We, in Canada, working for the betterment of women's rights are
exasperated with the Federal Conservative Government under Prime
Minister Stephen Harper because of funding cuts that affect groups
advocating for women-the most prevalent being cuts to the Status of
Women Canada Program wherein twelve (12) of sixteen (16) offices
nationwide have had to shut down!

Our laws look pretty on paper; but, as has been proven time and time
again, a law has no teeth until it is tested. After years of advocating
for the women and children of Bountiful caught in the horrendous web of
polygamy, we are still waiting for legal action to be taken against
them.

For the good of all, violence against women and children in all
countries must be discussed, brought to the forefront, and stopped.

Thank you for your invitation to make a statement.
