[16days_discussion] Advocacy for getting to zero

“World
AIDS Day manifestation as part of 16 days activism by Women in Action Against gender Based Violence
Cameroon (WACameroon)”.

Women in Action Against
gender Based Violence (WACameroon) is conscious of the fact that there are many
persons living with HIV&AIDS most of them being women and girls and are
afraid of telling the closest relatives and friends. WACameroon is calling on
everyone to break the silence, avoid stigma & discrimination and promote
openness on issues of gender violence, sexuality and HIV & AIDS?

WACameroon recognizes the
fact that:

Stigma and discrimination promote the spread of HIV & AIDS.

Stigma and
discrimination prevent us from being tested,

Stigma and
discrimination prevent us from going for treatment,

Stigma and
discrimination prevent us from protecting ourselves,

Stigma and
discrimination prevent us from living positively.

During the World AIDS Day 2011; WACameroon joined the caravan moving towards:

Zero stigma and discrimination.

Zero new HIV infections.

Zero AIDS related deaths.

The staff of WACameroon
on December 1st 2011 joined the caravan including HIV and AIDS
support groups most of whom are women in the North West region of Cameroon and
marched from the Bamenda Regional Hospital to Nkwen market square, an area noted
for high promiscuity and commercial sex. The march covered a distance of about
5Km. We were advocating for the rights of PLWHA and for all stakeholders and especially government of
Cameroon to multiply and intensify efforts to ensure Zero new HIV infections, Zero Stigma and discrimination against
PLWHA, Zero AIDS related deaths. The participants wore T-shirts and had posters
and flyers with messages creating awareness on the world AIDS day theme.  At the Nkwen market square, government
officials of the North West region of Cameroon including the representative of
the governor joined the caravan and addressed the crowd. Officials acknowledged
that the North West region of Cameroon has the highest prevalence rate of HIV in
the country -a situation which must be reversed. They assured participants that
the Government is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that HIV is eliminated in
Cameroon.

Dear 16 Days:

Thank you so much for responding to me.? As I said I would be interested in presenting a series of workshops that focus on the types of violence experienced by women from around the globe, which has led to a documented increase in HIV prevalence.? It will also be important to showcase examples of programs shown to be effective in decreasing violence and treating women and children affected.? I have some contacts where I live,(Berkeley, Ca.) through my Church who are very involved in the "Heal Africa and Hope Walks programs which are thought of very highly.? I would like to use the conference as a vehicle to support and expand programs such as these.

Loren Jones

Dear 16 Days:

Today is also the opening day for abstracts to be submitted to the 2012 International Aids Conference.? The topic of International Violence against Women and HIV is one that I would like to tackle as a "hub at the conference.? Could we please work together on this project?

Dear 16 Days Participants,

Today, on World AIDS Day, we mark the beginning of
an annual campaign designed to encourage public support for, and development of, programs to prevent the spread of HIV infection, and provide education and promote awareness of issues surrounding HIV/AIDS.

World AIDS Day was first observed in 1988 after a summit of health ministers from around the world called for a spirit of social tolerance and a greater exchange of information on HIV/AIDS.? World AIDS Day serves to strengthen the global effort to face the challenges of the AIDS pandemic.

For more information on the intersections of violence against women and HIV/AIDS, see the Center for Women's Global Leadership's report, "Strengthening Resistance: Confronting Violence Against Women and HIV/AIDS," available at http://cwgl.rutgers.edu/globalcenter/publications/strengthening.htm.

In solidarity,
The 16 Days
 Team
