A fascinating article in yesterday's New York Times featured some of the positive benefits of paternity leave. In Sweden where 85 percent of men opt to spend more time with their children for extended periods of time, there is evidence that a mother's future earnings increase on average 7 percent for every month the father takes leave. Evidence also shows that a shift in fathers' roles is perceived as playing a part in lower divorce rates and increasing joint custody of children. The most interesting for any socio-economic setting is how a law (initially considered "ahead of public opinion" and controversial) was able to change cultural norms both at work and in the home, specifically how the law caused a "new definition of masculinity" to emerge.
